Azure Cosmos DB: The 2025–2026 Recap for Data Engineers

1. The Rise of "Agentic" Data: Microsoft Agent Framework 1.0
The biggest shift this year is the native integration with the Microsoft Agent Framework (GA as of April 2026). Cosmos DB is no longer just a sink for data; it’s now the primary memory layer for intelligent agents.
Why it matters: With native integration into Foundry Agent Service, you can now build long-term memory for AI agents directly within your database without external "glue" code.
2. Intelligent Throughput: Enhanced RU Pooling & Serverless
Cost management has traditionally been the biggest "pain point" for Cosmos DB users. Over the last 12 months, Microsoft has doubled down on RU Pooling.
The Change: You can now share throughput capacity across your entire Cosmos DB fleet more effectively.
The Impact: This significantly reduces the "idle cost" for smaller collections, making planetary scale more accessible for multi-tenant applications.
3. Advanced Change Feed & Vector Search
The Change Feed has evolved from a simple event log into a sophisticated tool for Global Secondary Indexes and real-time synchronization.
Vector Search: Native vector search capabilities have matured, allowing for high-performance similarity searches directly within the NoSQL API. This eliminates the need to move data to a dedicated vector database for RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) patterns.
Cosmos DB seems like its evolving from a pure NoSQL store into an AI-Ready Data Platform.
